Raku

According to Japanese history, the technique of Raku pottery originated by accident due to one of the countries many natural disasters. During a frenzied rebuilding, Korean potters began producing enormous inventories of roofing tiles. In their haste, they began to use long tongs to remove the still-hot tiles from the kilns only to discover that the tiles did not crack or break. The clay had the ability to withstand the shocking move from the hot kiln to the cool air due its the high sand content. Although the history of pottery in Japan is obscure, this particular type originated from the 400-year old Zen tea ceremony of Japan. The Emperor at that time commissioned a potter by the name of Raku to produce special vessels for the tea ceremony.

Here are some the the examples that are being used on these pots. i really like how the first one turned out. it is a color choice that i have not really seen yet and i would like to use some of these glazes if i get a chance.

This is one of the pots that i threw on the wheel. i have thrown other pots but i always forget to take pictures of them and i take them home without taking pictures. i was trying to make the whole pot red and then dip the top in like a whitish color. in ended up not working very well because when i was using the sponge i kind of took the paint off the top. it still does not look that bad but i would of liked it with two colors.
